Ayana Mathis is an American novelist, essayist, and critic whose debut, The Twelve Tribes of Hattie (2012), became a New York Times bestseller and Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 selection. Her second novel, The Unsettled (2023), further established her as a major voice in contemporary literary fiction. She has published essays and criticism in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Financial Times, Rolling Stone, Guernica, and Glamour, and teaches in Hunter College’s MFA program.
