Granny Woman

In the midst of the Great Depression, Bessie and Fletcher Elliott are forced to leave their struggling farm in North Carolina for Beacham, West Virginia, lured by the promise of income from coal mining. However, they quickly discover the grim realities of miner life under a controlling company, where Fletch struggles to adapt while Bessie takes on multiple roles, including treating the unaffordable doctor’s patients. Their year is marked by the dangers of mining, including a devastating explosion, alongside growing solidarity among miners, challenging decisions about unionizing, and Bessie's deepening connections within the community despite the turmoil.
