On the icy planet of Menard-Kev, a hard-won peace treaty between human and Maltaani forces is jeopardized by rising tensions among the Maltaani royalists and nationalist subjects. The establishment of a Terran embassy in the capital city of Daarben ignites further unrest, especially after a controversial genetic report is released. Amidst the chaos, First Lieutenant Abner Fortis and Lima Company are deployed to assist the embassy, grappling with the challenge of maintaining peace while navigating the shadowy dealings of the Galactic Resource Conglomerate.
