Robert Penn Warren (1905–1989) was an American poet, novelist, literary critic, and teacher, and a leading figure in the New Criticism movement. He wrote ten novels, numerous poetry collections, essays, and influential literary textbooks with Cleanth Brooks, including Understanding Poetry. His best-known novel, All the King's Men, won the 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, and he also won Pulitzer Prizes for poetry in 1958 and 1979; in 1986, he became the first U.S. Poet Laureate.
