After completing bachelor's and master's degrees in New Zealand and a doctorate at Johns Hopkins University, he became an associate professor of political science and international relations at Long Island University in Brooklyn. His writing focuses on how geography, technology, and strategy shape warfare, including campaigns from antiquity through the modern era.
