John Hersey (1914–1993) was an American novelist and journalist whose career combined literary fiction with distinguished narrative reporting. He won the 1945 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his first novel, A Bell for Adano, and became best known for Hiroshima, his landmark 1946 New Yorker account of six atomic-bomb survivors. Beginning in 1947, he devoted most of his time to fiction while continuing to write nonfiction and teach writing at Yale.
