Ntozake Shange (1948–2018) was an African American poet, playwright, novelist, performance artist, and essayist. She became widely known for her groundbreaking choreopoem for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, which blended poetry, music, dance, and drama. Across her career, she published poetry collections, plays, novels, memoirs, essays, and children’s books, often centering Black women’s experiences, identity, race, gender, and cultural heritage.
