Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo

Ntozake Shange’s cherished novel, Sassafrass, Cypress & Indigo, follows the lives of three sisters from Charleston, South Carolina, and their mother. Sassafrass, the eldest, pursues her artistry as a poet and weaver in Los Angeles, while Cypress seeks liberation through dance, and young Indigo remains rooted in her Southern upbringing, embracing the magic of her surroundings. Together, their journeys explore themes of identity, creativity, and the bonds of family against a backdrop of cultural richness.
