Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008) was a Russian novelist, historian, and playwright whose writing exposed the realities of Soviet repression and the Gulag system. His major works include One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, The Gulag Archipelago, and the historical novel cycle The Red Wheel. He was awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature and continued writing in exile before returning to Russia in 1994.
