Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918–2008) was a Russian novelist, historian, playwright, and essayist whose writing exposed the realities of Soviet repression and the Gulag system. His breakthrough came with One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962), followed by major works including The Gulag Archipelago, In the First Circle, Cancer Ward, and the historical epic The Red Wheel. Awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Literature, he continued writing in exile and returned to Russia in 1994.
