Per Wahlöö (1926–1975) was a Swedish journalist and novelist who began publishing fiction in 1959. He wrote crime novels both independently and with Maj Sjöwall, with whom he created the influential ten-book Martin Beck police series, known for its realistic investigations and criticism of Swedish society. His novel The Laughing Policeman won the Edgar Award for Best Novel in 1971.
