Maj Sjöwall (1935–2020) was a Swedish author, journalist, translator, and pioneer of Nordic noir. With her partner Per Wahlöö, she co-wrote the ten Martin Beck novels, beginning with Roseanna (1965), combining meticulously researched police investigations with sharp social criticism. After Wahlöö’s death in 1975, Sjöwall continued working mainly as a translator, journalist, and occasional author.
