Yukio Mishima (1925–1970), the pen name of Kimitake Hiraoka, was a Japanese novelist, short-story writer, playwright, and essayist. After briefly working for Japan’s Finance Ministry, he became a full-time writer and gained international recognition with works including Confessions of a Mask, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, and The Sea of Fertility tetralogy. His writing is known for its stylistic range, psychological intensity, preoccupation with beauty, eroticism, death, tradition, and the tensions of postwar Japanese society.
