Osamu Dazai (1909–1948), the pen name of Shūji Tsushima, was a major Japanese novelist and short-story writer associated with the Buraiha, or “Decadent” school. Beginning in the 1930s, he developed a confessional, often semi-autobiographical style rooted in the Japanese I-novel tradition, writing about alienation, despair, social dislocation, and postwar change. His best-known works include The Setting Sun, No Longer Human, and the short-story collection Otogizōshi.
