In the late nineteenth century, as New Zealand's women's suffrage movement gains momentum, two young women from contrasting backgrounds are poised to make their mark on history. Matariki Drury, with her mixed heritage as a Maori descendant and the daughter of a white businesswoman, and Violet Paisley, who comes from a struggling Welsh coal-mining family, find their lives intertwined by a shared passion for social change. Together, they confront personal challenges and traumas while navigating the fight for equal rights and racial justice, ultimately learning the importance of reconciliation over retribution in their quest for empowerment.
