In 1975 Laos, as the Communist Pathet Lao takes control of the nation, seventy-two-year-old Dr. Siri Paiboun, an untrained yet resourceful Paris-trained doctor, is appointed as the national coroner. Faced with the challenge of satisfying the party’s demands for answers, Dr. Siri leverages his wit and charm, remaining unyielding to bureaucratic pressures. With the stakes high for both the living and the dead, he navigates his new role, aware that the displeasure of the spirits could have lasting consequences.
