Edward Alexander Crowley, born on October 12, 1875, to affluent parents, evolved from a life of privilege and traditional education into a prominent figure in Western esotericism. Rejecting his Christian upbringing, he joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and pursued various spiritual practices, claiming to receive the foundational text for his religion, Thelema, during his 1904 honeymoon in Egypt. Known for his controversial lifestyle, including drug use and bold views on sexuality, Crowley navigated a complex life filled with notoriety and literary output, leaving a lasting, if divisive, influence on counterculture before his death on December 1, 1947.
