Born into wealth in 1875, Edward Alexander Crowley rejected his Christian upbringing to immerse himself in Western esotericism, joining the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later formulating the Thelema religion after claiming contact with a spiritual entity during his honeymoon. His life was marked by his controversial lifestyle, including drug use, bisexuality, and a belief in libertinism, which led him to be both reviled and admired, especially in the counterculture of the 1960s. Crowley's prolific literary output spanned poetry and more provocative works, ultimately leaving a complex legacy by the time of his death in 1947.
