Bernard Lewis (1916–2018) was a British-American historian and prolific author specializing in the history of the Middle East, Islam, and relations between the Islamic world and the West. He began publishing with The Arabs in History in 1950 and went on to write influential scholarly and general-audience works including The Emergence of Modern Turkey, The Middle East, What Went Wrong?, and The Crisis of Islam. He taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies and Princeton University, and his books were translated into more than 20 languages.
