Sol Stein (1926–2019) was an American novelist, playwright, poet, editor, publisher, and writing instructor. He founded Stein & Day in 1962 and edited works by major writers including James Baldwin, David Frost, Jack Higgins, Elia Kazan, Dylan Thomas, and W. H. Auden. He wrote nine novels, including the million-copy seller The Magician, as well as nonfiction, screenplays, plays, and the influential writing guides Stein on Writing and How to Grow a Novel.
