Bryce Courtenay (1933–2012) was a South African-Australian novelist who began writing fiction after more than 30 years in advertising. He published his debut novel, The Power of One, at age 55 in 1989; it became an international bestseller and launched a career of bestselling historical and contemporary novels set largely in South Africa and Australia. He wrote more than 20 books, including The Potato Factory trilogy, Jessica, The Persimmon Tree, and Jack of Diamonds.
