Robert O. Paxton is an American historian and author who taught at Columbia University, where he became Mellon Professor Emeritus of Social Sciences. His writing focuses on modern European political and social history, especially Vichy France, Nazi collaboration, and the rise and spread of fascism. His major books include Vichy France: Old Guard and New Order, Vichy France and the Jews, French Peasant Fascism, and The Anatomy of Fascism.
