John L. Plaster began writing in the early 1990s after retiring from the U.S. Army, drawing on his experience as a Special Forces soldier, SOG veteran, and sniper instructor. His first book, The Ultimate Sniper, was followed by histories and memoirs about MACV-SOG, including SOG, SOG: A Photo History of the Secret Wars, and Secret Commandos. He has also written extensively about sniping, firearms, and military history, including works on Civil War and World War I sharpshooting.
