Richard Yates (1926–1992) was an American novelist and short-story writer whose fiction examined the disappointments, self-deceptions, and emotional isolation beneath ordinary mid-century American life. After serving in World War II, he worked as a journalist, ghostwriter, publicity writer, and speechwriter before publishing his acclaimed debut, Revolutionary Road, in 1961. He went on to write six more novels and two short-story collections, while also teaching creative writing at several universities.
