Irene Hunt was an American author and educator best known for distinguished children’s and young adult novels. Her debut, Across Five Aprils, drew on family stories of the Civil War and earned Newbery Honor recognition; her second novel, Up a Road Slowly, won the Newbery Medal. She also wrote No Promises in the Wind, The Lottery Rose, and other historically grounded coming-of-age fiction.
