Susan Eloise Hinton is an American author best known for pioneering realistic young adult fiction. She wrote her first novel, The Outsiders, while still a teenager; it was published in 1967 and became a landmark of YA literature. Her subsequent novels, including That Was Then, This Is Now, Rumble Fish, Tex, and Taming the Star Runner, continued to explore adolescence, class, friendship, violence, and identity, while she also wrote children's fiction and screenplays.
