John Temple is an investigative journalist, author, and journalism professor at West Virginia University. His nonfiction books draw on extensive reporting to examine major issues in American life, including the opioid epidemic in American Pain, the U.S. death-penalty system in The Last Lawyer, the work of a Pittsburgh coroner’s office in Deadhouse, and antigovernment militia movements in Up in Arms. Before entering academia, he worked as a newspaper reporter in Pittsburgh, Greensboro, and Tampa.
