Judy A. Bernstein is an American writer who began her major publishing career after meeting Sudanese refugees Alephonsion Deng, Benson Deng, and Benjamin Ajak as a San Diego International Rescue Committee mentor in 2001. She helped develop their experiences into the acclaimed memoir They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky: The True Story of Three Lost Boys of Sudan, published in 2005, and later co-wrote Disturbed in Their Nests: A Journey from Sudan’s Dinkaland to San Diego’s City Heights with Alephonsion Deng. Bernstein continues to write, speak publicly about refugee experiences, and support refugee-related causes.
