Allan W. Eckert (1931–2011) was an American novelist, historian, naturalist, playwright, and screenwriter who began writing about nature and American history as a teenager. He published more than 40 books, including the historical narratives The Frontiersmen and That Dark and Bloody River, natural-history works, children’s fiction, and science fiction. He also wrote more than 200 episodes of Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom, earning an Emmy Award, and received a Newbery Honor for Incident at Hawk’s Hill.
