Joanna Macy (1929–2025) was an American author, eco-philosopher, Buddhist scholar, and systems theorist whose writing connected Buddhist thought, general systems theory, deep ecology, and environmental activism. She authored or coauthored more than a dozen books, including the memoir Widening Circles, Coming Back to Life, World as Lover, World as Self, and Active Hope, and translated Rainer Maria Rilke’s poetry.
