Robert Graves (1895–1985) was an English poet, novelist, critic, translator, and mythographer whose writing career began with poetry shaped by his service in the First World War. He gained early recognition for Lawrence and the Arabs and his war memoir Goodbye to All That, then became internationally famous for the historical novels I, Claudius and Claudius the God. He also wrote extensively on mythology, poetry, biblical subjects, biography, and literary criticism, publishing more than 120 books and over 1,200 poems.
