Gwendolyn Brooks (1917–2000) was an influential American poet, novelist, and writer from Chicago. She published more than twenty books of poetry, along with prose collections and the novel Maud Martha, and became the first Black author to win the Pulitzer Prize. Her work explored race, poverty, injustice, womanhood, and urban Black life, while she also mentored younger writers and supported Black-led literary presses.
