David McGowan was a Los Angeles–area writer and researcher who studied psychology at UCLA and also worked as a general contractor. He published investigative nonfiction on American politics, serial murder, and the hidden history of the 1960s music scene, including Derailing Democracy, Understanding the F-Word, Programmed to Kill, and Weird Scenes Inside the Canyon. He died in 2015 after a battle with lung cancer.
