Reynolds is an American literary critic, biographer, and historian whose writing focuses on American literature, culture, and history, especially the nineteenth century and the Civil War era. He is the author of acclaimed works including Walt Whitman’s America, Beneath the American Renaissance, John Brown, Abolitionist, Waking Giant, Mightier than the Sword, and Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Times, and has received major honors including the Bancroft Prize and Lincoln Prize.
