John Kennedy Toole (1937–1969) was a New Orleans novelist and English professor who wrote The Neon Bible at age sixteen and later composed A Confederacy of Dunces while serving in the U.S. Army in Puerto Rico. Although he died before either novel achieved broad recognition, A Confederacy of Dunces was published posthumously in 1980 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1981.
