Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977) was a Russian-American novelist, poet, translator, essayist, and literary critic who began his career writing in Russian before becoming one of the leading English-language prose stylists of the 20th century. After emigrating from Russia following the 1917 Revolution, he published Russian-language fiction in Europe and later moved to the United States, where he taught at Wellesley and Cornell. His major works include The Eye, The Luzhin Defense, Lolita, Pale Fire, and Ada or Ardor.
