E. B. “Sledgehammer” Sledge (1923–2001) was a U.S. Marine veteran and biology professor whose wartime notes became the acclaimed memoir With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa, published in 1981. His posthumous sequel, China Marine, appeared in 2002 and chronicled his service in postwar China and return to civilian life.
