Peter Guralnick is an American music critic, author, and screenwriter whose writing focuses on the history and cultural meaning of American roots music, including blues, country, soul, and rock ’n’ roll. He is best known for his prize-winning two-volume biography of Elvis Presley, Last Train to Memphis and Careless Love, as well as biographies of Sam Cooke and Sam Phillips. His work also includes music-history books, essays on creativity, documentary scripts, liner notes, and the novel Nighthawk Blues.
