Barry H. Lopez (1945–2020) was an American essayist, nature writer, and fiction writer whose career began with published essays, stories, and articles in 1966. Best known for Arctic Dreams, which won the National Book Award for Nonfiction, he wrote extensively about landscapes, wildlife, human cultures, Indigenous knowledge, and environmental ethics. His work includes literary nonfiction, travel writing, memoir, short stories, and novels, published in venues such as Harper’s, Granta, Orion, Outside, and The Paris Review.
