Carson McCullers (1917–1967) was an American novelist, short-story writer, playwright, essayist, and poet associated with the Southern Gothic tradition. She established her literary career with The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940), followed by acclaimed works including Reflections in a Golden Eye, The Ballad of the Sad Café, and The Member of the Wedding. Her fiction is noted for its empathetic portrayals of loneliness, alienation, social outsiders, and emotionally isolated characters in the American South.
