Walter Benjamin (1892–1940) was a German essayist, literary critic, cultural theorist, and philosopher. After abandoning an academic career when his habilitation was rejected, he worked as a freelance writer, translator, and feuilleton journalist, producing influential essays on literature, art, photography, technology, and modernity. Forced into exile in Paris in 1933, he pursued his unfinished Arcades Project and became widely recognized through posthumous publication and translation.
