Florence Hasseltine Atwater was an American writer and editor who studied French literature at the University of Chicago and wrote short pieces for publications including The New Yorker and The Atlantic. After her husband Richard Atwater suffered a stroke in 1934, she revised and completed his manuscript, Mr. Popper's Penguins, which was published in 1938 and became a classic children's book and a 1939 Newbery Honor recipient.
