Richard Tupper Atwater (1892–1948) was a Chicago newspaper columnist, book editor, and professor of Greek at the University of Chicago. He wrote humorous newspaper pieces and several books, including Rickety Rhymes of Riq and Doris and the Trolls. He began Mr. Popper’s Penguins, but after a disabling stroke in 1934, his wife Florence completed and revised the manuscript; their 1938 book received a 1939 Newbery Honor.
