Henry Steele Commager (1902–1998) was an American historian, essayist, editor, and public intellectual who wrote and edited more than 40 books and hundreds of essays. He first gained wide recognition as coauthor, with Samuel Eliot Morison, of The Growth of the American Republic (1930), and later wrote influential works on American history, constitutionalism, political thought, and historical interpretation, including Theodore Parker: Yankee Crusader, Documents of American History, and The American Mind.
