Mary (White) Rowlandson (c. 1637–1711) was a colonial American writer best known for her 1682 autobiographical account, A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson, also published as The Sovereignty and Goodness of God. Written after her eleven-week captivity during King Philip’s War, it became one of the earliest and most influential works in the American captivity-narrative tradition.
