Italo Calvino (1923–1985) was an Italian novelist, short-story writer, essayist, and editor whose career began with neorealist fiction inspired by the Resistance. He later became known for blending fable, fantasy, science, philosophy, and formal experimentation in works such as Invisible Cities, If on a winter’s night a traveler, and Cosmicomics. He also edited Italian Folktales and worked for the Einaudi publishing house, while contributing extensively to newspapers and literary journals.
