His novels, including The Humans, How to Stop Time, The Midnight Library, and The Life Impossible, often combine imaginative or speculative premises with questions about identity, time, grief, hope, and mental health. He is also known for the memoir Reasons to Stay Alive, the nonfiction book The Comfort Book, and the children’s series beginning with A Boy Called Christmas.
