Mary Hunter Austin (1868–1934) was an American novelist, essayist, poet, playwright, critic, and memoirist. An early nature writer of the American Southwest, she became best known for The Land of Little Rain (1903), which portrayed the region’s landscapes, wildlife, and people. Her broader work also explored Indigenous cultures, feminism, ecology, and life in the American West.
