Andersonville was a notorious prison where the majority of inmates stayed for less than four months, arriving mostly in spring and leaving by early autumn. The population grew dramatically from May to August 1864, and the death toll among the prisoners was extraordinarily high, with most inmates either dying or being released within a few months.
