The Girl Back Home

In September 1938, seventeen-year-old Emily Flannigan is sent to Liverpool to board a trans-Atlantic liner as war looms, but her journey starts with her suitcase being stolen and help from the dashing Howard Mortimer. During the voyage, she encounters others escaping their pasts and faces significant challenges upon arriving in New England, forcing her to mature quickly. A budding correspondence with Howard unfolds amid wartime misunderstandings, and upon her return to England, Emily must confront her changed circumstances, including caring for a deceased friend's child and fulfilling a promise to an old woman.
